Golden Flashes Dominate U.S. Amateur Qualifier
Kent State golfers claim three of the three of the four spots
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Next month’s U.S. Amateur Men’s Golf Championship will have a distinct Kent State flavor after the Golden Flashes claimed three of the four spots up for grabs in Monday’s qualifier. Rising junior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario / Highland Secondary) won the event by six strokes and will be joined by seniors J.P. Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec / Polyvalente St. Joseph) and John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev. / Hudson [Ohio]) at the Championship which takes place Aug. 23-27 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
Playing Manakiki Golf Course (par 72) in Willoughby Hills, Ohio and Kirtland Country Club (Par 71) in Willoughby, Ohio, Hughes fired a 13-under 130 with rounds of 64 and 66 that included four eagles on the day.
“I kept the ball in play pretty much all day,” said Hughes. “I was looking at a lot birdies or stress-free pars.”
Paiement, who also qualified for the U.S. Amateur last season, finished third with a 139 posting rounds of 70 and 69. Hahn (71-69) tied for fourth place with Peter Skirpstas of Medina at 140 before winning a playoff for the final qualifying spot on the fourth extra hole when he sank a 20-foot birdie putt.
The performance was particularly gratify for Hahn who lost in a playoff at last year’s qualifier.
“I am so pumped up right now you wouldn’t believe it,” said Hahn. “This is unreal, I’ve always wanted to play in the U.S. Am.”
On top of the three players advancing on, Kent State also had three others finish in the top 11 of the 82-man field. Fresh off his win at the Northeast Ohio Amateur senior John Furlong (Medina, Ohio / Medina) shot a 142 (71-71) to finish tied for sixth, but lost out on a tiebreaker to Thomas Clemons of Chicago, Ill for the second alternate position. Tied for ninth was incoming freshman Correy Conners (Listowel, Ontario) (72-71=143) who has already won two events this summer. Senior Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario / Holy Trinty) rounded out the participants for KSU finishing tied for 11th with a 144 (71-73).
“What a great day for Kent State golf,” said Head Coach Herb Page. “I am proud of them all and Needless to say I’m looking forward to next season.”

Bentley knocks off McCoys
The Dundas Real McCoys couldn't outlast defending Allan Cup champion Bentley Generals as the Alberta team topped Dundas 4-2 Friday to advance to its third straight appearance in the national amateur hockey championship final game.
In the evenly matched opening period, Bentley found the net first with a powerplay goal 7 minutes into play. Dundas came right back with its own powerplay goal from Mark Jooris, assisted by Rob DeCiantis and Ryan Kuwabara less than two minutes later.
Dundas scored the only goal of the second period. Jerry Galway's even strength marker, assisted by Ryan Christie, gave Dundas a 2-1 lead.
In net, Dundas goalie Dan Turple stopped all 16 shots Bentley fired at him to help Dundas hold the one goal lead.
But Bentley entered the final frame focused on a comeback. They fired 18 shots at Turple. A powerplay goal four minutes into the period tied the game up again, then Bentley moved head 13 minutes later.
When Dundas pulled Turple from the net for an extra skater in the final minute, Bentley iced the win with an empty net goal.

McCoys advance to semi-final
A tie was enough to earn Dundas Real McCoys a bye into the semi-finals of the 2010 Allan Cup national amateur hockey championship, Wednesday afternoon.
Dundas came from behind to even Powell River Regals 4-4 in regulation. After one five-minute overtime period, the match remained deadlocked earning Dundas their third point in two games to lead their division.
The first place finish after the round robin advances Dundas to the semi-final - one win away from a berth in the championship game.
Dan Pitre scored two goals - including Dundas' first goal and final, game tying, goal. Ryan Kuwabura and Justin Davis added Dundas' other two goals.
Real McCoys assists went to Davis, Mike Kennedy, Jerry Galway, David Russell and Steve Hurst.
Dundas had to scramble back several times after Power River took leads throughout the game, but neither team was able to take control.
Dundas goalie Dan Turple made 30 saves to keep the McCoys in the game.
Powell River will face South East Prairie Thunder, with the winner of that game moving on to face Dundas for a spot in the Allan Cup championship final.

McCoys win Allan Cup opener
With strong goaltending and a solid penalty kill, the Dundas Real McCoys opened their quest for the Allan Cup national championship winning 3-1 over South East Prairie Thunder, in British Columbia Tuesday.
Dan Turple made 43 saves for Dundas, while the team held its opponent scoreless on eight powerplays.
The loss evened the Thunder’s record to one win and one loss, after their previous 4-2 win over Powell River Regals. Dundas was scheduled to face Powell River Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless opening period, NHL veteran Mike Kennedy gave Dundas a lead halfway through the second frame, assisted by Shawn Shewchuk on a powerplay.
Ryan Healy gave Dundas a 2-0 cushion about five minutes later, assisted by Ryan Kuwabura.
Healy came to the Real McCoys from former Ontario rival Brantford Blast when the team folded. He had a three year OHL career in Sault Ste. Marie and Oshawa.
The Thunder solved Turple eight minutes into the final period. But Dundas regained the two-goal lead when Rob DeCiantis, a veteran Real McCoy who starred with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL during the mid-1990s, found the net less than two minutes after the Thunder’s only goal.
DeCiantis was assisted by Ryan Christie and Kuwabura.
The Thunder outshot Dundas 44 to 29, but the McCoys appeared to focus on defence and goaltending as general manager Don Robertson suggested before the team left town for Canada’s national amateur hockey championship.
Host Fort St. John was the only undefeated team after two days, winning their first two games 7-1 and 6-3.

Blues Season Ends
The Dundas Blues season ended Sunday night with a 6-3 loss to Grimsby Peach Kings in game six of the Niagara District Junior C hockey league's east division final.
After a close, back-and-forth series, Grimsby won the last two games convincingly to take the series four games to two.
Sunday night, Grimsby jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
Dundas' Robert Bentivegna, the Blues top scorer throughout the playoffs, responded with a goal to cut the Peach King lead to 2-1. John Murray picked up an assist.
Grimsby found the net once more before the end of the frame to take a 3-1 lead into the second period.
The visiting Peach Kings took control in the middle frame, scoring two unanswered goals to stretch their lead to 5-1 entering the third period with the east division playoff title in sight.
But the Blues didn't roll over, holding Grimsby back for half the period until a powerplay goal by Dundas' Mike Tache, assisted by Mike Peters, made it 5-2.
Dundas closed the gap a bit more two minutes later, as Cole McNeil scored with help from Andrew Clark.
But 5-3 was as close as Dundas would get on this night.
With no scoring in the next six minutes and time running down, the Blues pulled their goalie in favour of an extra skater. It didn't work. Grimsby scored on the empty net with less than two minutes to play, effectively putting the game out of reach and icing a 6-3 win and a hard fought series win over the Blues.
Over three periods, Grimsby outshot Dundas 33 to 24. Both teams scored once on seven powerplays.
Dundas goalie Shawn Krzykala stopped 28 of 33 shots.

Series lead switches to Grimsby
The Peach Kings finally figured out how to win at home, and took the first lopsided game of the Niagara District Junior C east division final, winning 7-2 in Grimsby, Friday night.
"It's amazing how fast this game can change," Blues general manager Steve Aglor observed.
The series until now has been marked by tough, evenly-matched games.
Now with Grimsby up three games to two and the best of seven series returning to Dundas Sunday night, the Blues will also have to win in their own arena in order to force Grimsby to a seventh and deciding game.
Aglor said Grimsby played solidly for the entire 60-minutes, while Dundas managed one good period - the third - when the game was already out of reach.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the opening period, Grimsby took control quickly in the middle frame, scoring four straight goals to go up 6-0 on Dundas. The sixth goal came on a penalty shot.
Dundas finally found the net 13 minutes into the period when Kevin Dowling scored a shorthanded goal, assisted by D.J. McConnell and Andrew Clark.
But Grimsby didn't allow any late rally to grow, scoring their seventh goal of the game just a minute about a half later.
Robert Bentivegna, assisted by Andrew Kolodzey, scored Dundas' second goal - the only point of the third period.
Grimsby outshot Dundas 33 to 28. While Dundas was scoreless in four powerplays, Grimsby only scored once in six chances.
Dundas goalie Shawn Krzykala suffered the loss, saving 14 of 18 shots in 25 minutes of play. Cam Graham played almost 36 minutes and stopped 12 of 15 shots.
"But that game is history and we have to prepare for Sunday," Aglor said "To win game six at home we definitely need every player to show up at the rink ready to play. If we play the way we did in the first four games of the series we will be going back to Grimsby for game seven."

Blues Bounce Back in OT
It took another nail-biting overtime victory, but Dundas showed patience and earned a 5-4 win Tuesday night to take a 3-1 lead in their best of seven quarterfinal series against Chippawa.
About six minutes into the extra period, BJ Caco set up Aaron Demain for the winner.
"We dominated most of the game and twice had two goal leads," said Blues general manager Steve Aglor.
He noted the Blues nearly doubled Chippawa's total shots on net, outshooting the visitors 52-27.
Kevin Dowling gave the Blues a 1-0 lead in the first period, assisted by Andrew Clark and Mike Peters.
In the second period, Dylan Gilbert stretched the Blues lead to two goals, with assists from Andrew Kolodzey and John Murray.
From there, it was a true back-and-forth affair as the two teams exchanged goals and the frame ended with Chippawa one point back.
Mike Peters, with help from Dowling and D.J. McConnell, scored in the busy second period. And Gilbert added his second of the game, assisted by Derek Searle and Mike Tache.
Chippawa scored the only goal of the third period four minutes in, to tie it up.
Dundas scored once in four powerplay chances, and held Chippawa to one powerplay goal in six chances.
Goalie Shawn Krzykala kept the game tight, stopping 23 of 27 shots.
Despite not scoring in the third period, Dundas peppered the Chippawa netminder with 21 shots in 20 minutes.
"A couple of breakdowns let the Riverhawks back in," Aglor said
Now the Blues need the all-important fourth win of the series to move on the division final. Dundas would face the winner of the Grimsby-Glanbrook series - which arch-rival Grimsby currently leads three games to none.
Dundas travels to Chippawa for game five on Thursday, Feb. 25. If necessary, the teams will return to Dundas for game six on Saturday, Feb. 27, with a potential game seven scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28.

Blues Drop Game Three, Still Up By One
A lack of bodies and a lack of discipline cost the Dundas Blues a chance to take a stranglehold in their quarter-final series against Chippawa, as they lost 7-3 Sunday night.
Already down to 10 forwards and five defencemen, the Blues lost two key players to bad penalties and blew a 3-1 lead as Chippawa took advantage to score six unanswered goals.
Dundas opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Kevin Dowling, assisted by Andrew Cebulak and Mike Peters. After Chippawa tied it at one, Aaron Demain found the net, assisted by BJ Caco and Sean Malone, to give Dundas a 2-1 lead going into the second period.
Neither team received a penalty in the opening period, showing no indication of the trouble that was to come.
Less than three minutes in the middle frame, Jonathon Cox got into a fight and was handed a five minute major as well as a game misconduct.
Andrew Kolodzey scored for Dundas almost seven minutes later to give Dundas the 3-1 lead. John Murray and Andrew Clark had assists, but general manager Steve Aglor said Clark decided to "rub it in" to the Chippawa goalie. He received a 10 minute misconduct for inciting an opponent, then was tossed out of the game for "abuse of officials" when he made a few choice comments on the way to the penalty box.
"Two selfish plays left us with nine forwards and four defence, two forwards had to move back, which was the turning point of the game," Aglor said. "When we lost Clark the game seemed to turn right around in Chippawa's favour."
The home team scored four straight unanswered goals to complete the come back from a two-goal deficit to a four goal win.
Dundas goalie Shawn Krzykala made 19 saves and allowed five goals in the first two periods and just over two minutes of the third frame. He was replaced by Cam Graham after Chippawa took a 5-3 lead. Graham allowed two goals and made six saves in 17 minutes of play in the final period.
"It's playoff hockey and that is the time of year you have to turn your cheek," Aglor said.
After two back-to-back games, Dundas and Chippawa will get a day off before moving back to Dundas' J.L. Grightmire Arena for game four on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Dundas leads the best of seven series two game to one.

"It was a complete team effort with the players using up every ounce of energy they had to come up with the win," Aglor said.

Blues Advance to Second Round
Robert Bentivegna scored two goals as the Dundas Blues defeated Dunnville 4-2 Saturday night to advance to round two of the Niagara District East Division Junior C hockey playoffs.
General manager Steve Aglor said Dundas will take a couple of days off to rest before preparing for second round opponent Chippawa - a tough team that out-muscled the Blues for second place in the regular season and a first round playoff bye.
Bentivegna's three point night capped a five game first round series that saw the first year Blue lead the team in scoring with four goals and five assists.
Dunnville hit the scoreboard first, Saturday night, taking a 1-0 first period lead.
BJ Caco evened the tally with a shorthanded goal in the sccond period.
Bentivegna broke the tie with an unassisted powerplay goal early in the final frame. But Dunnville tied it at three with less than six minutes left.
In the final three minutes, Bentivegna scored the winning goal with assists from Andrew Kolodzey and Trevor Atkinson. Kalodzey iced the win with an empty net goal, assisted by Bentivegna.
Dundas goalie Shawn Krzykala made 25 saves for the win.
"The team showed a lot of grit and determination and was pretty drained by the time the game was over," Aglor said, adding the Blues finished with just 13 available skaters.
Aglor said Chippawa is a particularly tough team in their own rink. The division's number two team during the regular season topped Dundas four times in six regular season meetings.
"Every game was close," Aglor said. "The teams are evenly matched."
Dundas is still waiting for a few injured players to return to the line-up, including regular season scoring leaders Cole McNeil and Nick Bazinet. In the meantime, the Blues will continue to rely on several Midget AAA call-up's who all played a big role in the first round.
"They sure helped us get through the Dunnville series," Aglor said.
Veteran Blues Kevin Dowling (five goals, two assists in five games), Mike Peters (three goals, three assists in five games) and D.J. McConnell (two goals and four assists in five games) also stepped up throughout the first round.
The Blues open the second round in Chippawa on Tuesday, then return to Dundas' J.L. Grightmire Arena on Saturday Feb. 20 for game two at 6:30 p.m. Game three goes the next day in Chippawa and game four is set for Tuesday, Feb. 23 in Dundas.

Searle Hat Trick Leads Blues to Win
Derek Searle scored three goals, including a tie-breaker that put the Blues ahead to stay in the second period, leading Dundas to a 9-4 win in game three of a best of seven first round playoff series, Tuesday.
The big win gives the Blues a 2-1 series lead over the Dunnville Terriers as the teams head right back to the ice in Dunnville tonight for game four. Game five is set for Saturday night at Dundas' J.L. Grightmire Arena. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
Searle, a forward for both the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs Midget AAA team and the undefeated Highland Secondary School Hawks, scored the first goal of Tuesday night's name to give Dundas a 1-0 lead five minutes after the drop of the puck. He was called up along with Ryan Golow and Brayden Knott to help out the injury-plagued Blues. Dylan Gilbert and Robert Bentivegna picked up assists on the goal.

Dunnville bounced back early in the second frame with two straight goals to tie the match. Then Searle found the net a second time to break the deadlock, with help from Gilbert and Andrew Kolodzey.
From there, it was all Blues as D.J. McConnell, Gilbert and Mike Peters all scored in the second period. Peters, McConnell, John Murray, Andrew Clark and Mike Tache had assists as the Blues entered the final period up 6-3.
Bentivegna, Andrew Cebulak, and Searle each scored in the third period to finish off the convincing 9-4 win.
Dundas goalie Cam Graham made 26 saves for the win.
It was a satisfying rebound for the team after losing game two largely due to difficulty killing penalties and scoring on the powerplay.
Tuesday night, the Blues held Dunnville to just one goal on eight powerplay chances while scoring four goals of their own with a man advantage on 10 chances.
General manager Steve Aglor said the three call-up's all worked hard and contributed to the win. He also credited the line of McConnell, Peters and Dowling with a strong game. The trio had a total of five points between them.
Kevin Dowling gave Dundas a 2-0 lead with a powerplay goal assisted by Sean Malone to wind down the opening period.

Dunnville win evens series
Dunnville's three powerplay goals were the difference as the Terriers evened their best of seven first round playoff series against Dundas at one game apiece with a 7-4 win, Friday night.
John Murray scored twice for the Blues, including a penalty shot in the third period. Kevin Dowling and Aaron Demain each added one goal for the Blues. But it wasn't enough, as host Dunnville capitalized on three of their six powerplays while Dundas found the net on only one of their eight powerplays.
Murray's penalty shot cut Dunnville's lead to 6-4 with a minute to play. An empty net goal 30 seconds later capped the win for the Terriers.
The home team found itself killing more penalty time than the visiting Blues - but Dundas failed to make the most of their opportunities with a man advantage.
Blues general manager Steve Aglor said Dunnville is the most improved team in the league.
"You have to give them credit. They took advantage of our penalties," Aglor said.
Blues starting goalie Cam Graham stopped 11 of 14 shots in just over a period of work. Shawn Krzykala played the remaining 38 minutes and also allowed three goals, stopping 17 of the 20 pucks shot at him by Dunnville.
"We didn't get the goaltending we need in the playoffs," Aglor said. "Both our goalies struggled, allowing a few weak goals. But they can't be blamed for the loss. If some of our players continue to take selfish penalties it could be a quick exit from the playoffs. Hopefully it will be a wake up call."
The deadlocked series returns to Dundas' J.L. Grightmire Arena for game three on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Blues open playoffs on winning note
Moments after receiving the league most sportsmanlike player award Tuesday night, Kevin Dowling scored on his first shift of the game to lead the Dundas Blues to a 5-3 win over Dunnville in game one of the best of seven first round playoff series.
Dowling added another goal on a powerplay just over six minutes later to give Dundas a 2-1 first period lead.
Dunnville tied the match up in what evolved into a back-and-forth, penalty filled game that saw Dundas serve 73 minutes on 21 infractions and Dunnville serve 69 minutes on 21 infractions.
Dundas' John Murray broke the 2-2 tie with a powerplay goal early in the second frame, but Dunnville marched right back to knot the game at three goals each.
Blues veteran and Dundas native Mike Peters netted the winner with six minutes left in the second frame.
In the final period, Dundas clamped down defensively to hold the slim lead - and Dundas' Derek Searle, one of several late additions to the injury-riddled Blues roster - added some insurance with the team's fifth goal.
"Kevin had a strong game," general manager Steve Aglor said. "Derek had a strong game for us as well. "He definitely has no problem playing in this league."
Dundas goalie Cam Graham stopped 24 of 27 shots to earn the win.
Peters, Murray, Jonathon Cox (2), D.J. McConnell, Robert Bentivegna (2), BJ Caco, and new addition Trevor Atkinson all added assists for Dundas.
The first round playoff series continues in Dunnville Friday, Feb. 5 with an 8 p.m. start. The teams return to Dundas for game three on Tuesday Feb. 9 for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Tuesday happens to be the 54th anniversary of the night in 1956 when the New York Rangers played an exhibition game against local junior players at the Dundas Arena, now known as J.L. Grightmire Arena.
