Golden Flashes Dominate U.S. Amateur Qualifier
Kent State golfers claim three of the three of the four spots

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Next month’s U.S. Amateur Men’s Golf Championship will have a distinct Kent State flavor after the Golden Flashes claimed three of the four spots up for grabs in Monday’s qualifier. Rising junior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario / Highland Secondary) won the event by six strokes and will be joined by seniors J.P. Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec / Polyvalente St. Joseph) and John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev. / Hudson [Ohio]) at the Championship which takes place Aug. 23-27 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Playing Manakiki Golf Course (par 72) in Willoughby Hills, Ohio and Kirtland Country Club (Par 71) in Willoughby, Ohio, Hughes fired a 13-under 130 with rounds of 64 and 66 that included four eagles on the day.

“I kept the ball in play pretty much all day,” said Hughes. “I was looking at a lot birdies or stress-free pars.”

Paiement, who also qualified for the U.S. Amateur last season, finished third with a 139 posting rounds of 70 and 69. Hahn (71-69) tied for fourth place with Peter Skirpstas of Medina at 140 before winning a playoff for the final qualifying spot on the fourth extra hole when he sank a 20-foot birdie putt.

The performance was particularly gratify for Hahn who lost in a playoff at last year’s qualifier.

“I am so pumped up right now you wouldn’t believe it,” said Hahn. “This is unreal, I’ve always wanted to play in the U.S. Am.”

On top of the three players advancing on, Kent State also had three others finish in the top 11 of the 82-man field. Fresh off his win at the Northeast Ohio Amateur senior John Furlong (Medina, Ohio / Medina) shot a 142 (71-71) to finish tied for sixth, but lost out on a tiebreaker to Thomas Clemons of Chicago, Ill for the second alternate position. Tied for ninth was incoming freshman Correy Conners (Listowel, Ontario) (72-71=143) who has already won two events this summer. Senior Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario / Holy Trinty) rounded out the participants for KSU finishing tied for 11th with a 144 (71-73).

“What a great day for Kent State golf,” said Head Coach Herb Page. “I am proud of them all and Needless to say I’m looking forward to next season.”

Bentley knocks off McCoys

The Dundas Real McCoys couldn't outlast defending Allan Cup champion Bentley Generals as the Alberta team topped Dundas 4-2 Friday to advance to its third straight appearance in the national amateur hockey championship final game.

In the evenly matched opening period, Bentley found the net first with a powerplay goal 7 minutes into play. Dundas came right back with its own powerplay goal from Mark Jooris, assisted by Rob DeCiantis and Ryan Kuwabara less than two minutes later.

Dundas scored the only goal of the second period. Jerry Galway's even strength marker, assisted by Ryan Christie, gave Dundas a 2-1 lead.

In net, Dundas goalie Dan Turple stopped all 16 shots Bentley fired at him to help Dundas hold the one goal lead.

But Bentley entered the final frame focused on a comeback. They fired 18 shots at Turple. A powerplay goal four minutes into the period tied the game up again, then Bentley moved head 13 minutes later.

When Dundas pulled Turple from the net for an extra skater in the final minute, Bentley iced the win with an empty net goal.

McCoys advance to semi-final

A tie was enough to earn Dundas Real McCoys a bye into the semi-finals of the 2010 Allan Cup national amateur hockey championship, Wednesday afternoon.

Dundas came from behind to even Powell River Regals 4-4 in regulation. After one five-minute overtime period, the match remained deadlocked earning Dundas their third point in two games to lead their division.

The first place finish after the round robin advances Dundas to the semi-final - one win away from a berth in the championship game.

Dan Pitre scored two goals - including Dundas' first goal and final, game tying, goal. Ryan Kuwabura and Justin Davis added Dundas' other two goals.

Real McCoys assists went to Davis, Mike Kennedy, Jerry Galway, David Russell and Steve Hurst.

Dundas had to scramble back several times after Power River took leads throughout the game, but neither team was able to take control.

Dundas goalie Dan Turple made 30 saves to keep the McCoys in the game.

Powell River will face South East Prairie Thunder, with the winner of that game moving on to face Dundas for a spot in the Allan Cup championship final.

McCoys win Allan Cup opener

With strong goaltending and a solid penalty kill, the Dundas Real McCoys opened their quest for the Allan Cup national championship winning 3-1 over South East Prairie Thunder, in British Columbia Tuesday.

Dan Turple made 43 saves for Dundas, while the team held its opponent scoreless on eight powerplays.

The loss evened the Thunder’s record to one win and one loss, after their previous 4-2 win over Powell River Regals. Dundas was scheduled to face Powell River Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless opening period, NHL veteran Mike Kennedy gave Dundas a lead halfway through the second frame, assisted by Shawn Shewchuk on a powerplay.

Ryan Healy gave Dundas a 2-0 cushion about five minutes later, assisted by Ryan Kuwabura.

Healy came to the Real McCoys from former Ontario rival Brantford Blast when the team folded. He had a three year OHL career in Sault Ste. Marie and Oshawa.

The Thunder solved Turple eight minutes into the final period. But Dundas regained the two-goal lead when Rob DeCiantis, a veteran Real McCoy who starred with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL during the mid-1990s, found the net less than two minutes after the Thunder’s only goal.

DeCiantis was assisted by Ryan Christie and Kuwabura.

The Thunder outshot Dundas 44 to 29, but the McCoys appeared to focus on defence and goaltending as general manager Don Robertson suggested before the team left town for Canada’s national amateur hockey championship.

Host Fort St. John was the only undefeated team after two days, winning their first two games 7-1 and 6-3.

Blues Season Ends

The Dundas Blues season ended Sunday night with a 6-3 loss to Grimsby Peach Kings in game six of the Niagara District Junior C hockey league's east division final.

After a close, back-and-forth series, Grimsby won the last two games convincingly to take the series four games to two.

Sunday night, Grimsby jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.

Dundas' Robert Bentivegna, the Blues top scorer throughout the playoffs, responded with a goal to cut the Peach King lead to 2-1. John Murray picked up an assist.

Grimsby found the net once more before the end of the frame to take a 3-1 lead into the second period.

The visiting Peach Kings took control in the middle frame, scoring two unanswered goals to stretch their lead to 5-1 entering the third period with the east division playoff title in sight.

But the Blues didn't roll over, holding Grimsby back for half the period until a powerplay goal by Dundas' Mike Tache, assisted by Mike Peters, made it 5-2.

Dundas closed the gap a bit more two minutes later, as Cole McNeil scored with help from Andrew Clark.

But 5-3 was as close as Dundas would get on this night.

With no scoring in the next six minutes and time running down, the Blues pulled their goalie in favour of an extra skater. It didn't work. Grimsby scored on the empty net with less than two minutes to play, effectively putting the game out of reach and icing a 6-3 win and a hard fought series win over the Blues.

Over three periods, Grimsby outshot Dundas 33 to 24. Both teams scored once on seven powerplays.

Dundas goalie Shawn Krzykala stopped 28 of 33 shots.

Series lead switches to Grimsby

The Peach Kings finally figured out how to win at home, and took the first lopsided game of the Niagara District Junior C east division final, winning 7-2 in Grimsby, Friday night.

"It's amazing how fast this game can change," Blues general manager Steve Aglor observed.

The series until now has been marked by tough, evenly-matched games.

Now with Grimsby up three games to two and the best of seven series returning to Dundas Sunday night, the Blues will also have to win in their own arena in order to force Grimsby to a seventh and deciding game.

Aglor said Grimsby played solidly for the entire 60-minutes, while Dundas managed one good period - the third - when the game was already out of reach.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the opening period, Grimsby took control quickly in the middle frame, scoring four straight goals to go up 6-0 on Dundas. The sixth goal came on a penalty shot.

Dundas finally found the net 13 minutes into the period when Kevin Dowling scored a shorthanded goal, assisted by D.J. McConnell and Andrew Clark.

But Grimsby didn't allow any late rally to grow, scoring their seventh goal of the game just a minute about a half later.

Robert Bentivegna, assisted by Andrew Kolodzey, scored Dundas' second goal - the only point of the third period.

Grimsby outshot Dundas 33 to 28. While Dundas was scoreless in four powerplays, Grimsby only scored once in six chances.

Dundas goalie Shawn Krzykala suffered the loss, saving 14 of 18 shots in 25 minutes of play. Cam Graham played almost 36 minutes and stopped 12 of 15 shots.

"But that game is history and we have to prepare for Sunday," Aglor said "To win game six at home we definitely need every player to show up at the rink ready to play. If we play the way we did in the first four games of the series we will be going back to Grimsby for game seven."
